Age Restrictions

Age Restrictions For Junior Provincials:
First year Juvenile wrestlers are allowed to participate in a Junior competition, provided that they reach the minimum age of 17 years in the year the event is held. They must present a medical certificate at the time of registration.

Age Restrictions For Senior Provincials:
A Juvenile may compete in a Senior competition if they will reach age 17 during the calendar year of the event. A medical certificate is required at the time of registration. Competitors under the age of 20 must provide proof of age.

New Online Drug Database Helps Canadian Athletes Compete Doping-Free

The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport launched a new online global Drug Information Database (DID) today. As Canada's world-recognized sport ethics and anti-doping agency, the CCES partnered with UK Sport, its counterpart in the United Kingdom, to provide athletes and their support personnel with easily accessible and accurate information about which drugs, medications, and other substances are prohibited in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.

Viola wins Gold in Tourcoing

Viola Yanik of the Saskatoon Wrestling Club won gold in the 63 kg weight division over the weekend at the Gilbert Schaub International Wrestling Meet in Tourcoing, France. The Olympic 5th place finisher and former Huskie wrestler defeated Nadia Moussaoui in the gold medal final to take top prize. Yanik will now travel to Klippan, Sweden for the Klippan Ladies' Open March 4-6 before competing in the Trophe Milone tournament in Naples, Italy the following week.

The instructors will be members of the UofS Huskie Wrestling Team. This is a good opportunity to hit the mats for lots of fun and some learning from instructors who remember what it's like to be an elementary-aged wrestler. There will be a bus traveling to Cadet-Juvenile Nationals in Windsor, leaving Regina on Monday evening, March 29. We have some extra seats available, so if you would like to hop on the bus and come along to watch our athletes compete, or if you are an athlete looking for a ride to Windsor, give us a call. Please contact Donna Ackerman of the Cat-town Wrestling Club or Patty Sundet of the Pile of Bones Wrestling Club to discuss details. Seats are available on a first come, first serve basis. Level 3 Technical Coaching Clinic

SAWA is planning a Level 3 Technical Clinic for May, 2004. This course will be available to any coaches that are fully certified level 2 or are in the Canada Games Coaching pool. Any clubs who wish to partner with SAWA to apply for a 1989 Jeux Canada Games Foundation, Inc. Grant may apply to SAWA by November 21, 2003.  Clubs who are eligible are those without their own Non-Profit Corporation number.  The SAWA Board will select the application to endorse if more than one is received.  The information required includes the project for the grant and the budget for the project.

Note to all Saskatchewan wrestling coaches:
The selection process for the 2005 North American Indigenous Games wrestling team has started. As part of the process we are requesting that all aboriginal athletes of Canada Games age (born in 1987-1990) attend the 2005 Canada Games selection tournaments. The first Canada Games tournament is being held on December 20, 2003 (the November 23 competition has been cancelled). Senior age athletes who wish to compete at the 2005 NAIG are requested to attend the open tournaments held in Saskatchewan, including the Cougar Open on November 22, 2003.

SAWA's 4th Annual Athletes and Coaches of the Year Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Weyburn Inn.  Tickets are $20 and are available from the SAWA Office until Wednesday, October 1.  Award Recipients
2003 Senior World Championships

CBC Television Sports will be airing two highlight shows from the recent Freestyle World Championships that were held in New York.

The first show will air on Saturday, September 27th from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Eastern (10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sask time) on the Sport Saturday program. This show will focus on the women's events in which Canadian Viola Yanik won a bronze medal.

The second show will air on Saturday, October 11th from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. (Eastern) also on the Sport Saturday program. This show will feature the men's competition.

Todd Hinds named to Olympic Coaching Staff

SAWA is pleased to announce that Todd Hinds will be the Assistant Coach for the Women's Olympic Team for 2004. This is a 2-year position, which includes this summer's program leading up to the World Championships in early September. This program includes: - The Austrian Grand Prix and the German Grand Prix - The Canada Cup - The Pan Am Games - The World Championships, New York.
