Simpson heads 2004 Hall of Famer class
DARREN STEINKE/Daily Herald

The Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame class of 2004 was announced at a news conference Wednesday in the Ches Leach Room at the Comuniplex.

Joining Terry Simpson, the legendary Prince Albert Raiders head coach, in the individual wing of the hall are hockey players Frank and Vic Chad, golfer Alice Cooke as an athlete and a builder, and veteran wrestling coach Gary Frey as a builder. Jim Bristowe will be inducted in the category of meritorious service to sports for his volunteer work, while Morley Jaeger, best known as the longtime former play-by-play voice of the Prince Albert Raiders, also enters in the meritorious service category.

As the Raiders are now guided by head coach Peter Anholt and assistant coach Dave Manson, who both played for Simpson, another local coach is also about to watch one of his former athletes take over his role.

Frey coached club and high school wrestling in Prince Albert for 29 years and a number of his athletes have become national champions in age-class or university ranks.

Frey is now cutting back his coaching duties with the Prince Albert Wrestling Club and the high school club and will focus more on administration. His former pupil, 28-year-old Joe Tesar Jr., is taking over the bulk of the coaching.

"I am more than happy to have a younger athlete, who has come though our club, do exactly that," said Frey. "That is what you hope for. You are not around forever.

"I know (Tesar) seeks the fulfilment of the sport at another level. We are very happy that he has done that."

Frey was surprised and humbled by his Hall of Fame selection. He said he had to thank his wife Judy for her enduring support over the years.

"There is always a person in the background that sits there and encourages you and makes you feel you need to go on and do that," said Frey. "I really, really have to thank my dear wife for allowing me and giving me the privilege and the opportunity to coach.

"I know that if she would not have wanted me to do that, I would not have done it.

"My induction is also hers."
