After
winning the Canada West Championship for the fourth time, fifth-year
University of Saskatchewan Huskies wrestler Megan Buydens was named
the Canada West Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year.
Winning the crown in the 67kg
weight class this year was not an easy task, as Buydens defeated SFU's
Ashlea McManus, from Great Britain and ranked fifth in the world. Buydens
also beat out Calgary's Leah Callahan, who was named the Canada West
Outstanding Female Rookie of the Year.
"Megan wrestled very composed, and
as smart as ever. She is an amazing competitor and always rises to the
occasion when she needs to," said Huskies Head Coach Todd Hinds. "Megan
could have won this award three times over. She is an amazing athlete."
Buydens continues to be a standout
among the Huskie women, who placed third at the Championship and had the
most-ever members qualify for the CIS Championships this year.
Five Huskie women, as well as five
Huskie men, will represent the University of Saskatchewan on the national
stage March 3-4 in St. Catharines, Ontario.
