2nd Women's World Cup of Wrestling

Ottawa -- Canada repeated it's 2001 5th place performance at the 2nd Women's World Cup held in Cairo, Egypt, October 19-21. Canada opened with losses to Ukraine (18-8) and China (19-8) before defeating Tunisia (25-3) and host country, Egypt (24-4) on Saturday. The final day saw two further losses to Russia (23-5) and Japan (20-7).

Individually, the top performer was Ohenewa Akuffo (Brampton, ON - Guelph W.C.) who finished in 2nd place. She defeated 3-time World Champion Kyoko Hamaguchi from Japan but lost by fall to a Russian opponent. Hamaguchi ended up winning the competition on tie-breaking criteria. Earning a bronze medal was Viola Yanik (Saskatoon, SK - Saskatoon W.C.).
